Hot Water Tank Insulation Blankets Against Code

ATCO EnergySense frequently fields questions regarding the use of hot water tank insulation blankets and their merit.  To many people’s surprise, the installation of add-on insulation to residential water heaters is actually not acceptable under the Safety Codes Act in Alberta.

The installation of add-on insulation kits on water heaters is considered unacceptable for the following safety reasons.

  • Water heaters shall be installed as per the manufacturer’s certified installation instructions and the Code for clearances to combustible materials.  The insulation kits consist of combustible material.
  • Some water heater manufacturers prohibit the installation of insulation kits in their certified installation instructions and state that they may shorten the life of the water heater and may endanger life and property.
  • The insulation kit may obstruct the combustion air supply
  • The insulation kit will conceal all the operating and warning labels that must remain visible for the user to ensure the safe and correct operation of the water heater

In addition, water heaters are certified to the applicable CSA Standards which meet current requirements for energy efficiency, and the field installation of an add-on insulation kit would be unnecessary.

If looking for ways to improve the energy efficiency of your hot water heater, insulate the first three to six feet of cold and hot water pipes near your water heater to help reduce heat loss and save energy.   You may also consider purchasing an on-demand hot water heater that heats water as needed, eliminating standby losses and consuming up to 30% less energy.
