The following table will assist you in converting units of energy, understanding common abbreviations and is a great tool for calculating your energy consumption. For example, you can convert mmbtu to thousand cubic feet (mcf), mmbtu to cubic meters (m3), gigajoule (GJ) to mcf, Btu to m3, or find out the number of Btu in one GJ of natural gas.
To calculate the monthly electricity consumption of a specific appliance or electrical device, take the rated wattage (W) of the equipment and divide by 1,000. Multiply this by the hours per day the appliance is in operation. Multiply this result by the number of days in the month. This will give you an estimate of kilowatt-hours used per month for a particular device.
For example: W/1000 x hours-per-day x days-per-month = kWh per month
To find the monthly cost of an electrical appliance, take the energy consumption that applies (kWh) and multiply by your electricity costs.
kWh-per-month x $-per-kWh = $ per month
