Flash 4 Plug-In
You will need the Flash 4 plug-in or higher (Flash 5) for your browser to launch the ATCO Energy Sense House. If you do not have the plug-in use the link below to download the latest Flash plug-in for free.

Getting Started
Each room contains an energy calculator scorecard for natural gas and/or electricity. The scorecard automatically calculates an estimated monthly cost for individual equipment and appliances based on the total hours of use per day. As you visit each room, the scorecard will track your running totals for both natural gas and electricity.

When you first enter the house you will be asked to input your current gas and electric rate. An easy way to determine what you are being charged is to divide the total dollar amount of your energy bill by the total consumed units of energy. For example, if your gas bill is $128.00 and you used 16 GJ of energy, you would divide 128.00 by 16 to come up with a figure of $8.00 per GJ. You would then input $8.00 as your gas rate.

Once you have input your rate, a new screen will appear asking you to provide the following information:

  • The month you wish to use for your calculations (The calculations for heating and cooling your home are based on average historical consumption data for that month.)
  • The square footage of your house, and
  • The age of your home

Now you are ready to enter the house. Start by clicking on the room you would like to evaluate first. You can move from room to room by using the room selection tool bar on the bottom of the page. Once you are in the room, choose the energy calculator you would like to use (electricity or natural gas).

A pop-up scorecard will appear that includes a list of the major appliances/equipment that use energy in that room. One at a time, select the appliance/equipment you use by clicking on the check mark next to it. The scorecard will automatically bring up the estimated average cost. If the average reflects your use, you can leave it as is. Or, you can adjust the length of time to better reflect your specific situation. (Appliances and equipment that run continuously or cycling are automatically set for you.)

Remember, if you make a change to an item you will need to click on the re-calculate button. The scorecard will keep a running total of the costs as you move through the rooms.
